Design Campus!

Happy Wednesday! I am just returning from an amazing “stay-cation.” My best friend and her husband came to visit Walker and I for a few days and we really lived it up. I’m super sad it’s over but we made the most of every minute and had a blast. Definitely one for the memory books! :)

As you all read the other day, I had an incredibly inspirational and fantastic time at Design Camp in Seattle in May. My favorite part, by far, was the network of spectacular people I connected with, learned from, and learned with! There is nothing more amazing than brainstorming and sharing ideas with other designers, bloggers, and creatives… talk about getting the artistic juices flowing! Day2_1

While I know that telling all of you to look into attending Design Camp may be financially or logistically difficult (or nearly impossible), I have some seriously awesome news: Design Camp has gone digital with Design Campus!! The site launched this morning and is a giant online community for networking, information, and inspiration! Not only does it have all of the information from the Design Camp lectures, but it also creates an online community for you to connect with other designers, bloggers, creatives, social media experts, and more.

Since I am a huge believer in this amazing educational summit, I am teaming up with Design Campus as an affiliate in order to spread the word and bring Design Camp to your computer screen! Yippeeeee!!

The best part about all of this? You can check out the community for 5 days for only $1! Ummmm… that’s not even as much as a cup of coffee. Once you fall in love, membership is $27 a month after the trial (but there is no commitment and you can cancel at any time… although, if Design Camp is any indication of how freakin’ awesome Design Campus will be, you won’t want to!). Plus, if you are already considering attending other design or blogger conferences, this price tag is much more budget-friendly!

Anyway, I really think that you will get so much out of this network of amazing people, as I did in Seattle. I say give it a whirl and see what all of my fuss is about! ;)

Bertie’s Closet

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I want to start by thanking everyone for their kind words and thoughts on Monday. It means a lot to me to have genuine, caring people in my life.

I am so excited to share our April sponsor with you today: Bertie’s Closet! We both quit our day jobs (software engineer and production assistant/odd part time job worker) and now work full time from home in Los Angeles, California. Bertie’s Closet is a handmade shop for laptop sleeves, iPad sleeves, and gadget accessories, and May will mark the completion of our fourth year in business. Before we started in 2009, we purchased a netbook that came without a sleeve or anything for protection. So we made a netbook sleeve, and a friend suggested we try selling them. Both of us, Jeff and Bertie, are now home everyday, making espresso and/or kale blueberry smoothies in the morning, making sleeves during the day, and packaging it all up with a handwritten thank you (Bertie’s “Thank you” looks a lot nicer than mine). Everything is made to order in our home, and it usually takes 2-5 days before shipment (though we do our best to ship everything out ASAP). We sell to everyone and ship worldwide.

You absolutely must go check out their shop to see more of these lovely sleeves. My personal favorite? It is a toss up for me between the adorable clothesline (and the owl flying off with someone’s unmentionables!) and the gorgeous brown herringbone with lace leaves.

Feel Good Art for Awesome People

I am so happy to say that we had amazing sponsor this January: the wonderfully talented Lisa Barbero who makes “Feel Good Art for Awesome People!” Lisa is a wife, mother, and artist-extraordinaire so, without further ado, I will hand it over things over to her!

I would definitely say I’ve had a lifelong and passionate love affair with making stuff. But then again, I’ve had an equally lifelong and passionate love affair with Cap’n Crunch. Yup, the cereal. After years of putting up with the Cap’s bittersweet love, I finally hold the secret wisdom of being able to eat those sugary, golden nuggets without cutting up the roof of my mouth. Maybe one day I’ll write a book called “Zen and the Art of Eating Cap’n Crunch”. OMG. That’s so the *new* title of my memoirs. It’s a fitting replacement for “Jurassic Park Scarred me for Life”.

Oh right. Back to the art stuff. I dig on raw line and the unexpected and infuse my work with modern color, original typography, and old fashioned hand drawn imagery. The end result is art with hints of romance, whimsy, inspiration, and lots of soul.

I enjoy the whole art making process and can’t see myself ever living something other than a handmade life. It’s important to me to do something different; to be inspired by my life, my environment, and the work of others, then make something completely unique that can inspire others in turn. I like being a part of that endless creative cycle.

Lisa was born in Washington D.C. and has lived all over the world from Georgia to Germany. She currently calls Rochester, New York home where she lives on an acre and a half of pseudo-suburbia with her soul mate and their munchkins.

Website Art Shop

Not only is she hilarious and amazingly talented, but she is also roughly from my neck of the woods in Upstate New York (near where I went to college!). WOOO NY PRIDE! I digress.
