Almost Two Months Later…

I feel as though this blog is like a television show that went on an unexpected and annoying two-month hiatus. But after about 7 weeks, I am back in action, with the hopes of being a more disciplined and consistent blogger. There have been a million things happening here over the past few weeks, and it took a lot of stress and lack of sleep to admit to myself that I had filled my plate a little too full. But let’s go backwards and start from the beginning…

Last we spoke, I was within days of leaving for Seattle for Design Camp. After running around like crazy to wrap up all loose ends before departing (including finishing a portfolio submission for a really amazing class at school and getting my finalized business cards printed in time for Design Camp — see which design I picked below!), I arrived in Seattle on Wednesday, May 1,  around midday and took a train from the airport straight to a station at the same intersection as my hotel. Super easy! I spent the afternoon walking around downtown Seattle and doing a little work in a little local coffee shop in Pike Place Market. That night, we had a getting-to-know-you mixer and I got to meet some really amazing people right from the start!BusinessCards Day1_PikePlace1 Day1_PikePlace2 Day1_PikePlace3 Day1_PikePlace4

Sorry for the awkward selfie. This is the only photo I got of the cocktail party… my attire. Oops.

The next two days were absolutely amazing. Taking place in the Seattle Design Center, the seminar was comprised of a series of lectures on various topics (from design trends and materials, to business and contracts, to universal and lighting design, to money and billing, to social media and blogging, to being a television personality…. I could go on forever!) every 45 minutes. I could write a blog post on each one if I had the time, but to get a basic idea of some of the things I learned, take a peek at these Decoist articles I wrote following the seminar:

Forecasted Design Trends for 2013

Forecasted Design Trends for 2014

The Future of Lighting, Universal, and Kitchen Design

Top 10 Tips on Designing a Space

The experience was incredible (minus the hotel disaster, as many of my Twitter followers know!). I got to learn from and with people who are also students, those who have just started their own firms, people who are five years in to their business, and a bunch of people who had been doing it for 20+ years. Getting to know everyone’s individual stories about where they are in their careers and why they came to Design Camp was really valuable. Besides the awesome people, the lectures were fun, informative, candid, honest, encouraged collaborative (rather than competitive) designers, and downright inspiring.Day3_1 Day2_4

I’ll be really honest: after announcing the big news that I was leaving my job to work as a freelance blogger and crafter, the panic really set in. I didn’t get any string art orders for the first week and I started to think, “WHAT did I just DO?!” Design Camp came at the perfect time because it put me in contact with 200 other people that had to take some of the same risks in order to get to where they are now, including some of the celebrity and superstar designers you watch on HGTV. Design Camp was exactly the inspiration and motivation I needed to start looking at my grand adventure as a risk worth taking and something I can be successful at, despite some of the “downs” between the “ups.” Design Camp changed my mentality… and I got my first order that very day. :)

While I could really go on forever about Design Camp, I will just say that it introduced me to some wonderful people who had a lot of helpful and encouraging things to add to my perspective and outlook. One of those people is Lori Dennis, co-host of Design Camp with Kelli Ellis, who is based here in Los Angeles. Not only was she a fabulous Design Camp host, but she also offered me the opportunity to do an internship with her, which I started a week later! I have already been to two architects meetings for an awesome commercial project and on two residential install days after only four weeks! I am learning a ton and having a blast working for Lori!

Other than interning for Lori once a week, I have been working my butt off at school for two other days a week. Work-wise, it has been a busy quarter on par with the last quarter. However, as I mentioned above (and have mentioned a ton on Twitter), I was also applying to be accepted into this awesome program at school that really does deserve its own blog post. All I will say was that the application and interview process was rigorous and took up a lot of “spare” time! Stay tuned for more on this later in the week. This week is finals week (yikes!) but most of my big stuff was due on Thursday. So, thankfully, I have a few things to finish today for tomorrow but then I have three weeks off! WOOOO! I will share all of my work soon!

Let’s see… what else am I missing from my hiatus? Walker’s well. Bo’s well. I’m well. Rent’s paid. Car’s dead but I’m working on that. I think that about covers the basics! I’m sure I will think of a million other things to share with you but this blog post is long enough for today. I apologize for being gone so long but I didn’t want to start back up again until I was sure I would be able to recommit to blogging regularly. No more of this sporadic posting crap, Erika! ;)

I’ve missed you all a ton! I have big plans to sit for hours and catch up on lots of blogs this Thursday so I can see what’s been going on in your lives as well! Thanks for sticking by me! Xoxo <3

What didn’t I cover here? Is there an update you’d like to hear that I missed? Let me know below!

Celebrate Life

Happy Earth Day, everyone! In celebration of Earth Day, I had planned to post about all of the lovely things in bloom in our backyard over the past couple of months. However, I have a heavy heart today because my uncle passed away suddenly last night, and I really don’t have it in me to write. So, I will leave you with a few photos that should serve as a beautiful reminder: Life is short so take a moment to stop and smell the roses (or lilac and honeysuckle). Celebrate Life.

Rest in peace, Uncle Rick. I love you.

Bo & Erika: The Love Story

I  know the blog has been slow this week but I am in the process of playing catch up from a crazy couple of weeks. Until I get a chance to photograph some of my recent projects, I thought I would share something fun with you this week. Saturday is the 5th anniversary of a very special day… the day I brought home an adorable little creature with four furry legs and a fan tail! I suppose I should start from the very beginning of the story before I start sharing all kinds of adorable Bo pictures.

In January of 2008, I was on The Price is Right. Yes, the game show (here is a full video if you don’t believe me). If you are going to watch the whole video stop reading because I am about to spoil it for you. I ended up walking away from the show with a trip to Washington D.C. and a Corvette! Needless to say that between the sales tax, the income tax (they consider the full value of the car “income” and tax it at an insanely high rate of close to 30% or so), and the car insurance costs (plus the speeding tickets a 21-year-old girl in a Corvette would inevitably attract), I wasn’t ever planning on keeping the car. So I simply signed a couple of pieces of paper at the dealership, sold the “used” car back to the them, and walked out of the building with the biggest check I have ever held in my hands. I went straight to the bank out of pure terror.

Bye, bye Corvette. We would have made a handsome couple.

I put all of the winnings into a savings account that I vowed not to touch until it was time to do something special for my future (and pay a boatload of taxes). However, my parents encouraged me to use a little bit to splurge on something special. I think they figured I would get an iPhone or some new clothes. Instead, I called them the next day and said, “I know what I want to spend my money on: adopting a puppy. I have wanted one for my entire life and now I finally have the money to take care of it myself. I have time while I am in LA to devote to training the dog and going to obedience lessons. However, I will be living in your house for one more summer before graduating so I need to make sure you are okay with it since it will affect you. Otherwise I can wait until after I graduate so that you never have to deal with it.” My parents responded with, “We’ll think about it but go ahead and start looking to see what’s out there.”

I spent the next few weeks scouring Petfinder during every spare minute of the day. I sent out hundreds of inquiries and even met a few dogs in person. However, none of them were quite right for my fairly specific requirements. Finally, after over a month of hunting, I stumbled upon an adorable little pup mistakenly listed in the “Adult” age group section of Petfinder (usually dogs under 3 or 4 years are listed under “Baby” or “Young”) and followed the link to an adoption ad for “Bo” on a rescue organization’s (Friends of Orange County’s Homeless Pets) website. I instantly connected with that sweet face and contacted the organization immediately.

This was Bo’s original adoption ad (now under “adopted dogs”).

After a series of emails with his foster mom over a couple days, I was convinced that this little guy could be “the one.” I drove down to Orange, CA, with my current LA roommate to meet the little furball that had already stolen my heart. When I got there, he was exactly what I had hoped for and knew I wouldn’t be able to find a better dog for myself in a million years.

The first picture ever taken of Bo & I. Forgive the crazy eye… I was over-excited I guess haha! ;)

I called my parents on the way home. When I told them I had found the dog of my dreams, I asked them for their final decision and my dad paused for a long time. Then he responded slowly by saying, “Your mom and I have been talking and we have decided that now really isn’t a good time for you to get a dog…” My heart sank and a tear fell down my cheek. While I prepared myself to calmly tell them I understood and would respect their decision, my dad happily shouts, “…we think it’s a GREAT time!” After busting into happy tears and yelling at them both for playing mean tricks on me, I excitedly told them all about the dog named Bo. I emailed an adoption application to Bo’s foster mom the minute I arrived home.

Bo’s foster mom must have sensed my connection with Bo because she chose my application over a few others. BO WAS MINE! We arranged to meet at the Petsmart in Tustin, CA, that Saturday where Bo would be microchipped and sent back with me to his new forever home.

On February 22, 2008, the night before I picked him up, my episode of The Price is Right aired on national primetime television. However, the next morning as I walked up to the adoption event at the pet store and saw that happy pup wiggling and prancing toward me, I was a thousand times more excited. Choosing to adopt Bo as my fur baby was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Now when people ask about my little canine family member, I like to tell them that I won Bo on The Price is Right. :)

After all of the excitement on his adoption day, Bo needed a serious nap! :)

P.S. The rescue organization didn’t really know much about Bo’s story prior to his arrival. Somehow he ended up at a high-kill county shelter that called the rescue organization to come take him because they thought he would make a great pet. When the rescue organization picked him up, he had kennel cough, parasites, and was way too skinny. After a little TLC, he was as good as new!

P.P.S. I was going to come up with a new name for Bo once I brought him home. While I debated, I kept calling him Bo and after a while, nothing seemed to fit quite as well as the name he came with! :)

P.P.P.S. The sumer living in my parent’s house with Bo ended up going so well that they adopted a Bo look-alike for themselves the following December! Coincidence? I think not!
