Date Night Winter Table Setting

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thanks to an 8-3 vote, Bo did indeed eat way too much turkey, just like his parents.

With all of the excitement of the holidays, it is easy to get wrapped up in entertaining and planning. However, I think it is so important to take some time out of this hectic month and have a nice date night with the person you love! Put on some great music, open a nice bottle of wine, and enjoy celebrating the holiday season with your better half.

Want to make date night just a little more special? Get your mind out of the gutter… this is a family-friendly-ish blog! ;) By setting the table like you were entertaining guests, it gives the whole date night a more formal, special, intimate feel. I am not crazy about overly-themed table settings, so here is my take on a simple, easy winter table setting that was created with things I already had around the house. The blue plates, mirror, runner, and glass give the table a winter-y feel (think sky, snow, and ice!) while the flowers and pine cones warm it up and and give it a woodsy holiday vibe.

Better late than never, I am linking up today’s table setting with Decor and the Dog’s Dare to DIY: Entertain link party. Go check out some other awesome holiday entertaining ideas! :)

Friendship is a Hoot!

Are you lucky enough to have people in your life that you know will be lifetime friends?

Nicole & Erika circa 2008

I will be the first to admit, I am literally the worst person in the universe at keeping in touch with friends, which is unfortunate considering that I moved over 3,000 miles away from everyone I knew. However, there are certain people that, no matter how much time has passed since I last spoke with them, everything seems the same as the good old days when I am with them.

Nicole is one of those people to me.  She was one of my closest friends in high school and every time that I talk to or see her, our relationship feels like it never skipped a beat.  I love that and I am so grateful to her for that.

The other day, I found an envelope in my mailbox with her familiar handwriting and I got super excited. Guess what I found?!

Good Luck Owl
Everyone knows that owls are wise…
So this owl gives guidance though small in size.
Good luck he brings and wisdom too
When you carry him close the whole day through!”

How adorable and thoughtful is that!?  We all know I have a mild obsession with owls (which I believe is genetic in my defense!) so this was the best little gift to get in the mail… not to mention that the little guy brings good luck, wisdom, and love from a wonderful person I wish I could see more often.  Also, there was a picture of a dog on the stamp! <3

So do me a favor and call, text, email, or even snail mail (my particular favorite) one of the people in your life about which you keep saying “I really should give {INSERT NAME HERE} a call! I’m the worst.”

As for the little owl, he has found his new permanent home on our living room shelf, resting on the easel that displays a picture of one of his relatives.

P.S.  I hope you all went out and voted today! I did:

Fall & Football Decorations

I am oh so envious of all of you that get to experience true fall: leaves changing colors, crisp autumn breezes, apple cider doughnuts. You get my drift. Here in LA, the most we get is a cooler night or two and a barrel of half-rotten pumpkins at every grocery store. Okay, I’ll stop whining but the point I am trying to make is that we sort of have to create fall around here. So over the weekend, we did just that!

The thing that most represents autumn in this apartment is FOOTBALL. We are big NY Giants and Nebraska Cornhuskers fans. So I went to a really awesome website to create some fun Nebraska football art for our front door at the beginning of this season. It was good luck on Saturday because we had an exciting win.

Walker even bought me some red and white gladiolas to support the team colors! GO BIG RED! Aren’t they stunning?!  They are STILL blooming, too…

To continue bringing fall to our place, Walker and I spent Saturday night carving pumpkins, drinking pumpkin beer, enjoying a fire in the fire pit, and listening to good music! It was glorious! Although, on second thought, it seems quite cruel to murderously de-gut and carve an innocent pumpkin while drinking the remains of his cousin.  Oh well… totally worth it! ;)

I had Monday off of work so I surprised Walker with another pumpkin that was painted with the Cornhusker “N” logo to match the art on our front door! I have been talking about getting a little plant stand for a while now, so I used the new pumpkins as an excuse to get an awesome one for $20 at Ikea. I made a little fall display out front for all to enjoy using the pumpkins, a piece of ornamental corn (for the Cornhuskers!), and some dried grape vines from our plant last year.

I really like the way it turned out! The only thing that stinks is that I have to bring the carved pumpkins inside on hot days so they don’t immediately rot!

To top off our fall celebrations, Walker came home from work to a homemade apple pie baking in the oven! We even made homemade chicken tortellini soup for dinner, just to maintain that cozy feel.

So maybe nature doesn’t really give us fall out here, but I certainly am feeling the good fall vibes in our place.  And really, that is what’s important. I love that happy fall feeling! :)
