Positively Adorable :)

Call me a sentimental fool but I saw these cards by Positively Green on Saturday and thought they were adorable! Every couple has their own little jokes and things that remind them of each other. One of those things for us is a seahorse (long story… but you will notice them in our living room crate among other places). So the seahorse card caught my eye right away when we were shopping at Handmade. Then the giraffes were so cute I had to buy both. :)

I plan to get some frames for these guys and hang them in our new workspace (YAY OUR DESKS ARE ON THE WAY!). So stay tuned!

P.S. On an unrelated note, here’s what is going on in our backyard today…
No, it’s not a grave. The plumber is replacing the sewer pipe that runs through the backyard. Hopefully this means fewer plumbing problems!

Cranes & Crates

I got all excited at Joann Fabrics yesterday when I saw two crates that looked like they would be PERFECT for record storage under our TV stand. I even had the guy take them to the fabric counter and measure them to make sure they would be wide enough for records.  He told me they were 12.25 inches wide (records with the sleeve are 12″) and I nearly shouted I was so elated.

Then the doubt started to creep in… did he give me external dimensions?  Probably. If so, was the wood on the sides bigger than an eighth of an inch? Probably. Would I be horribly disappointed when I got home? Probably. Needless to say, the man had already left to help another customer and the lady at the fabrics counter didn’t appreciate me trying to sneak back there to measure the crates myself. So I decided to take a chance… after all, I measured those records ages ago and maybe I had rounded up a little to 12″ to make it easy to remember.  Welcome back optimism!

Annnnnnd….. cue sadness.

They didn’t work.  My doubt was right. He gave me external dimensions plus each piece of wood was a quarter of an inch (making the internal dimension 11.75 inches).  And records with the sleeve are 12″ on the dot. The crates were a MEASLY .25 inches too small!  Bahhhh.

My disappointment disappeared pretty quickly though because once I knew what dimensions I needed, I was able to find some pretty sweet options online.  I will keep you posted!

The one thing I didn’t fail at yesterday was making Walker smile with a little surprise project waiting for him when he got home.

Let me explain… we both have been feeling a bit homesick lately. That always happens this time of year when Christmas seems so far in the past and future visits still seem so far in the future. So I decided to bring a little of Nebraska to our apartment. This month hundreds of thousands of Sandhill cranes migrate through the Nebraska Platte River Valley on their way north.

Walker’s family took a trip out to see the cranes this week and since he couldn’t join them, I brought the cranes to him. It’s silly and cheesy and the cranes aren’t even that well made, I know.  But it’s the thought that counts, right?

Au Revior Rise and Shine

You know when you plan to knock out a really simple easy project in a few minutes and everything goes horribly wrong?  That happened to our poor bedroom curtains last weekend.  I have been meaning to fix the curtains ever since we moved the bed up against the window but haven’t gotten around to it (see how they are stuck behind the bed frame in the picture below?).  Finally after Walker was unable to sleep in on a Saturday because of the bright sun, I decided it was time to take care of business so we could actually close them.  Easy in theory, right?

I took down the curtain rod and old brackets. No problem.  I used the stud finder to make sure that the brackets were placed higher up toward the ceiling on the same studs. Simple and uncomplicated. I went to drill new holes for the brackets… and FAIL. My sad little turquoise drill finally decided its life was over. My dad was sweet enough to give me that little drill when I moved out on my own and it has been so good to me over the years.  But it has been slowly dying and finally called it quits.  Needless to say, I didn’t get a chance to go to the hardware store to buy a new drill all last week so we have been without curtains going on 11 days now (don’t get too excited peeping toms… we have blinds)!

I bought a new drill on Sunday’s Home Depot trip and came home ready to put the curtains back up… until I remembered I had to charge the drill overnight first. Ugh. Monday and Tuesday flew by and now (after long last), I managed to get those dang brackets back into the wall!  After that, I used iron-on hem tape to get the curtains to sit just above the headboard so we can open and close them to our heart’s content. I love the way the higher curtains make the room seem so much taller! We are talking about getting new curtains eventually but I am just happy to finally have SOMETHING back on the wall.  Plus, we already have an idea for the white space above the window! Bring on the sun, Saturday morning… see you at noon! :)
