Easter Weekend with Mom

I’m baaaaaack! I took a mini-hiatus from most things blog related this weekend (except to mention when we got featured!) to enjoy the Easter visit from my mom.  We had such a wonderful time (and I miss her already)! There is a giant photo recap below but I thought I would mention a few other things before I bombard you with pictures.

First little note: Obviously I enjoyed my mom being in town but there is also a benefit to you: for the first time in ages, the entire apartment was clean!  So I finally managed to take and post new “progress” pictures for the Tour Our Home page!  WOO!  Check them out. :)

Second little note: Our awesome friend Sam at our corner liquor store scored us a second wine crate for our records! Thankfully it fits perfectly under the TV table and looks great (pictures to come at some point!).  Time to alphabetize and split up our vinyl (it’s sad that that makes me so happy)!

Okay- now it is the moment you have all been waiting for: the giant photo recap of our weekend! Be warned… this goes on a while.

Friday: My mom and dad lived in CA for 4 years while my dad went to grad school at UC Irvine.  She hasn’t seen it since so we spent the day down in the OC (and even found their old apartment!).Saturday: Santa Monica Pier and Promenade (shopping, eating, people watching) followed by naps and a movie.  No pictures… too lazy! :)

Sunday: Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanical Gardens… SO STUNNING! Here is where the excessive number of photos begins.  I have to give Walker a shout out since some of the pictures below were taken by him also.

Flowers… by Walker: April 6, 2012

I got up this morning, happy as could be because my mom is in town and we were all off of work today.  Then Walker made it even better by bringing my mom and I flowers and caramel coffee!  So sweet!

Short post today because I will be hanging with my mom all weekend but I also wanted to share that my DIY plant stand was featured on http://www.outdoorplantstandsshop.com! Check it out.. my goofy face is on the front page! :)

Grape Expectations

We got our zinfandel grape plant, Zaragoza, last May after falling in love with wine (growing, making, drinking- you name it).  She started growing like crazy so I used a wire tomato plant cage (which I clipped and bent open), some wire, and a wooden stake to create a trellis. After a long winter & spring of plumbing disasters which required moving the grape plant (don’t worry- the plant went into hibernation for the winter so it wasn’t disturbed), the trellis began to look a little (okay, a lot) worse for wear.  I decided to give the trellis a little love this weekend. Sorry that the wire is hard to see in the pics! :)

For those of you who have never seen grape growing on a vineyard, this website does a great job at explaining the Vertical Shoot Positioned (VSP) trellis system I am using for my “upright” growing grapes.  I am training the shoot to the bottom wire. Once she gets a bit bigger this year, I will get taller wooden stakes and the guide wires back up like last year (off of the sides of the tomato cage trellis).

Zaragoza didn’t produce any fruit her first year but she already has 4 bundles starting to grow this year.  Look at the difference in the size of these bundles over 2 weeks! Who wants to help make & drink our first bottle of wine?!
