Flowers…by Walker: January 13, 2012

As if I needed another excuse to brag about my awesome boyfriend and use my sweet new camera, I have decided to regularly post the beautiful flowers he brings home for me.  When we first started dating he noticed I had a bouquet of flowers on the table and he asked who got them for me.  When I said “me” (I always buy fresh flowers for the house… I LOVE THEM), he decided on the spot that it was his personal mission to make sure I never had to buy flowers for myself again.  Even though I told him it was totally unnecessary and that I didn’t mind buying myself flowers, he has followed through.  Although I have brought home the occasional plant or two, he has been more than kind enough to keep our house looking and smelling lovely with fresh flowers.  What a stud.  :)

To kick off the phenomenon we will now call “Flowers… by Walker” (and you have to say it in that really serious fragrance advertisement voice… “Envy Me… by Gucci”), here are some pictures of the gorgeous roses he sent to my work on my birthday!  They are absolutely stunning and look like they will be kicking for weeks.

As to not neglect the other bouquet of flowers we have on the coffee table, I also want to include some pics of those. Walker bought these lilies and roses for me on Sunday to kick off my birthday week.  He knows lilies are my favorite and these ones are unbelievable! :)

Afghan & Dog (not an Afghan dog)

I am so happy that the theme week is back under control. :)

Probably the best thing we brought back from the holiday visits was the green afghan throw blanket that my mom crocheted for Walker for Christmas.  Last year, she made me a beautiful red afghan for the living room, which happened to arrive in the mail on our first ever “fake snow day” (*see footnote below). We use it all the time so my mom decided to make one for the bedroom.  She saw the color we painted the accent wall (more on this next post!) and knew our bedding was black and white.  So she brought us some color (and sunshine as she always does)!
And then Bo decided it was his.  Sorry Walker.  Thanks Mom- we love youuuu!
*Fake snow day:  Growing up in much colder places, Walker and I both miss having snow days that force you to stay inside and be lazy/indulgent.  We go grocery shopping the day before so that the day can look like some variation of the following: cinnamon rolls and a crossword, movie in our pajamas, Scrabble/Yatzee/cards with a mid-afternoon cocktail and snack, cook a big dinner, go to bed early to the sound of fake snowflakes falling outside.  This day can also be referred to as “let’s pretend we are old people” day.

Skeleton Key Fever

Yes, I have it.

I was all excited to post this yesterday but I actually got asked to help work an important edit session at work last night (which is awesome!!  I couldn’t say no!). So though it is a bit delayed, I would like to continue the “stuff we brought from our visits home” week with a little something I got from my Nana. After bragging shamelessly at the family Christmas gathering about my new skeleton key necklace from Walker (I had been wanting one forever! This pic is from the Etsy seller gwendelicious), my Nana told me that she had a skeleton key in her jewelry box from the house where she grew up. Later that week, I went back over to her house and she brought the key out for me. It was so pretty… simple, vintage, and full of memories. She said that in those days people didn’t really lock their doors so her family only had 2 copies of the key. Since one skeleton key could open many of her neighbor’s doors, at night her father would stick his key into the lock from the inside to jam it up. Nana told me that she learned how to use her key from the outside to push the inside key back out of the lock so she could get into the house when she’d been out late!  Probably sneaking out with Papa… ;)

NanasSkeletonKey

Anyway, she gave it to me and I couldn’t think of a better place for it than next to the “Our First Place” key. I got a worn brown frame from Michael’s for $5 that had a little room between the glass and the cardboard insert. I cut small picture hanging nails with my she-hulk strength and my wire cutters so that the nails wouldn’t stick out the back. Then I placed the nails, hammered them in, and put everything back into the frame/glass. Since the cardboard insert couldn’t really fit back into the grooves in the frame, I was able to secure it with some tape (because it sat flush with the back of the frame). Now our little family heirloom is on display. The more skeleton keys, the merrier!  (Thanks Nana- I love you!)
